The Great Malaga Path Challenge

  • 8 days of guided walks
  • Full board
  • Transfer to/from Malaga airport

The Great Malaga Path - An epic long-distance footpath, completed in 2014, that circles the province of Malaga. With a total of 35 stages covering 650 kms, this circular walk starts and finishes in the town of Malaga, and takes the walker through some of the most beautiful areas of this province.

The Challenge - Join us as we traverse the eastern section of the path from the small village of Villanueva del Rosario, all the way to the coastal village of Maro, travelling through the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama natural park, which is unarguaby one of the most dramatic and spectacular parts of the walk. Incredible scenery, challenging paths, and undeniably Andalucían!

Key Facts – 8 days (including one rest day), 135 kilometres / 85 miles long, 4500 metres / 14750 feet of ascent, 1387 metres / 4550 feet highest point

The Route – Hiking the eastern side of the GR249 is more dramatic, in our opinion, when reversed! We start in the village of Villanueva del Rosario, which is located north of the ‘Central Limestone Arch’ and make our way south to the coastal village of Maro. The first half of the challenge takes us across the ridge of mountains that form part of the limestone arch, and then into the lower slopes of Olive Groves, and finally into the western flank of the Sierra de Tejeda natural park.

The final part of our challenge is in the Tejeda & Almijara natural park, where the walking takes on a more serious feel. Initially we skirt along the border, and then start the climb up into the heart of the park, reaching an altitude of 1387 metres (4550 feet) with breath-taking views all around, particularly towards the coast. We complete our hike as we drop down from the natural park and finish at the coast on Maro beach.

On The Trail – The GR249 uses an existing network of excellent paths and tracks, and so doesn’t present any real difficulty. However, the section that rises to the second highest point of the walk (day 7) is steep, with parts of the path very loose, so care is required here. There are also two consecutive days that total over 50kms (31 miles) of walking, so participants need to be able to cope with this duration of walking.

Surroundings

Andalucía is the southernmost province on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the meeting point of continental Europe with Africa, and where the waters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean battle their way through the narrow straits of Gibraltar. It’s cultural significance in the history of Spain can be seen throughout many of its’ reigions; from the Neolithic period, the occupation of the Romans, the Moorish invasion, and the battles of the Reconquista’s.

The diversity of these landscapes and geographical terrain gives rise to an array of environments that go from the sun soaked beaches of the costa’s through to the luxuriant mid-mountain areas and right up to the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

Located in the Malaga province, and bordering the provinces of Granada, Cordoba and Seville we are fortunate to have an array of beautiful walking and hiking areas that allow you to experience such a diverse landscape; from the coastal paths of the Costa del Sol, to the high peaks of the national parks, and the beautiful paths and tracks that weave their way through the small white Andalucían villages.

Having one of the best climates in Europe means that walking is almost a year-round activity, so if you’re one of our neighbours in Northern Europe then you can escape the long grey cold days of winter, and join us for warm, clear and sunny days of walking!

Me and my husband had a Fab holiday with stunning views and peaceful surroundings. Phil and Simone where very welcoming and always happy to do what they could to make our stay enjoyable. The room was spotless and comfortable. Good facilities to make you feel at home. The pool was the cleanest I have been in on holiday with Crystal clear water. I did not do any activities as I have a bad back but the guests around me where singing Phil praises and returning guests. I could tell that if I had gone on a trip I wouid have been in very safe professional hands. I was starting to feel disappointed I couldn't go as I was missing out! The food was lovely and Simones cooking is not tobe missed. I would definitely stay and have evening meals if you can as they are great value and so tasty. You do need a car unless you are doing a full packed week of activities. We explored all around the local area trying the different restaurants. Definitely recommend this for a holiday.

Phil and Simone are fantastic hosts, so welcoming with tea and cake on arrival even at 23.00! Phil even comes out to meet you at the nearest village Colmenar to guide you in. The Guest House is spotlessly clean, with views to die for. Breakfast was fab, as we're evening meals. Simone makes amazing cakes, not to be missed. The activities on offer at very reasonable prices are brilliant with lots to chose from, diving, walking, climbing, land rover safari, you will not be bored here. Lovely pool, lots of outside seating areas to take in the views. Make sure you hire a car as it is out in the hills so you will need it. Can't recommend Casa Mojon highly enough it was great....
